The Power of Gratitude: Cultivating a Thankful Heart in Your Home

The family room was designed in this Seattle, Washington home with gratitude in mind by Sherri Monte, interior designer at, Elegant Simplicity.

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the myriad blessings that surround us. We rush over here only to rush back over there. In the matter of a single day, we’ve got early school drop-offs, personal todos, that thing called work, after school activities, late night meetings, not to mention cooking dinner, tidying up our homes, + going to bed early enough to ensure we get a good night's rest.

It’s no wonder many of us are running on empty gas tanks. Everywhere we turn, it feels like the world is demanding more of us.

And that’s really why, at Elegant Simplicity, we're passionate about creating homes that aren't merely aesthetically pleasing physical environments but sanctuaries of peace, places where you can hear the echo of laughter and feel the resonance of love and gratitude reverberate in the walls.

Home innately has a transformative power when we cultivate it with intentionality.

A home should enrich our relationships with ourselves, the partners we choose to do this crazy thing called life with, and of course, our children.

So, in this life of ever-fleeting moments, let’s not allow ourselves for one more second to lose sight of the essence of gratitude. Let’s dive deep into the transformative power of gratitude, explore its profound impact on our personal well-being, relationships, and the beauty + functionality of our homes.

The Essence of Gratitude

Gratitude transcends mere words of thank-yous.

Gratitude is a profound appreciation for life's blessings.

From the monumental moments of marriage, starting a family or seeing a loved one celebrate a milestone of their own, to the merely mundane moments of cooking dinner or organizing the garage — there is gratitude for the keeping in all of it.

It might be holding onto the comforting embrace of a loved one, cherishing the serene moments of a snowfall, or the joy in a child's laughter. No matter what, life offers countless moments for gratitude.

Or, if you’re like Sherri, the deepest moments of gratitude come to life when everyone else is sleeping + the house is quiet.

Regardless, recognizing and cherishing these moments can profoundly impact our well-being. If we let them permeate our consciousness, our gratitude can shift our entire perspective. It can, and will, turn challenges into opportunities to learn from our experiences, and ordinary moments into extraordinary memories.

Harnessing Gratitude for Deepened Self-Love

Our relationship with ourselves is the cornerstone of our overall well-being. But how do we harness gratitude for ourselves? Below are several strategies, we recommend to really begin to embrace gratitude within self.

Self-reflection

Celebrate your journey, your milestones, and even your setbacks. They've shaped you. You are exactly where you’re meant to be (especially if you’re reading this) *wink*

Mindful Space In Your Home

One of the beautiful things about having a home is that it should be uniquely yours. So your home should have a corner dedicated to moments of introspection.

This might be a cozy reading nook, a calm meditation space, or simply a corner filled with art supplies. Either way, it's essential to have a space that allows you to connect with yourself.

Cultivating Gratitude with Your Life Partner

Relationships thrive on understanding, love, and appreciation. We’re human beings + we all make mistakes, but if each person in your relationship (including yourself) knows that behind all of the day-to-day, behind all the communication or miscommunication, behind all the unseen or overlooked things, you’re grateful for one another — then all it takes in the midst of the hustle + bustle of life is gratitude for the other person.

Here are several strategies for embracing a strong sense of gratitude with each other.

Daily Rituals

Sharing moments of gratitude can foster deeper connections. John and Sherri are a great example of this because they begin each day 1:1 together. Those moments when the house is whisper quiet, where the kids are still in bed + your phone isn’t ringing, are all about recognizing and appreciating the little things that make your relationship strong + unique.

Gratitude Notes

A heartfelt note left on the fridge, a message scribbled on the bathroom mirror, or a simple text or voice message can make a world of difference in your relationship. It may sound simple but it’s elegant *wink* and it’s in the moments that are so often overlooked that real gratitude lives. It’s in the stopping + thinking of the other in the middle of your day.

Shared Activities

Engaging in activities, be it gardening, cooking, or organizing *wink* not only creates memories together but offers opportunities to appreciate that you care about one another.

Teaching Kids the Value of Gratitude

Teaching children gratitude lays the foundation for a fulfilling life. Children are like sponges, absorbing values and behaviors from their surroundings. Teaching them gratitude sets them up for a lifetime of positivity.

Gratitude Journals

A simple journal can be a powerful tool to encourage your child to find things they are grateful for. Heck, it’s something adults can do too! By encouraging your children to jot down things they're thankful for every day you foster an environment of gratitude + appreciation.

Thank You Notes

Gratitude is necessary for self-development. That said, gratitude is reinforced when we express our appreciation for others. This comes in many forms. These can be a simple act of kindness like holding a door, writing a thank you note, or creating or buying a gift for someone.

Family Gratitude Jar

This can be a really fun activity for children of all ages. Every week, family members can write down moments of gratitude and place them in the jar. Once or twice a month, reading these out loud together can be a really heartwarming experience, reminding everyone of the blessings in their lives.

Gratitude In Designing + Organizing Your Home

Interior design is often seen as a reflection of our aesthetic preferences and functional needs. However, at its core, home design is deeply personal. It’s intertwined with our emotions, values, and the essence of who we are as people. Gratitude, as an emotion, plays a pivotal role in shaping this narrative.

At Elegant Simplicity, we want to create homes that exude warmth + positivity, as well as embrace your memories, your stories + your unique core values. We design + organize homes that's not just about aesthetics, but also about the emotions and experiences it fosters for you and your loved ones.

So, how do we do this? We thought you’d never ask *wink*

Assess Your Home Through the Lens of Gratitude

When we pause to assess our homes, it's not just about evaluating the physical layout or the decor.

Assessing is about introspection.

What emotions does each room evoke?

How do we want to feel when we step into our living space after a long day?

The answers to these questions lay the foundation for a home design that's not only intentional but rooted in gratitude. A home that doesn't just look good, but feels right… to you.

Becoming a Conscious Keeper

Our homes often become repositories of memories, emotions, and, unfortunately, clutter. Over time, we accumulate items - some with sentimental value, others out of impulse

To truly infuse gratitude into our home, it's essential to declutter and organize. This doesn't mean discarding memories but rather cherishing them by ensuring that every item in our home has a purpose and a place.

Rather than all the negative emotions that come with clutter, by becoming conscious keepers, we make room for positivity, clarity, and gratitude.

The Art of Conscious Curation

Once we've decluttered + only then can the journey of conscious curation really begin.

This is where the magic happens. It's about designing + creating a home that aligns with our core values, aspirations, and emotions.

Every piece of furniture, every color on the wall, every artwork, and every decor item should be a purposeful selection.

Elegant Simplicity® isn’t achieved by filling spaces with stuff but rather by curating them with intentionality.
— Elegant Simplicity

When we choose items that resonate with our values, our homes become sanctuaries of gratitude, reflecting our journey, dreams, and the essence of who we are + who we hope to become.

At Elegant Simplicity Interiors, our philosophy is deeply rooted in these principles. We believe in creating homes with everything you need and nothing more®. For us, organizing and design are not just about aesthetics, they're a holistic approach that marries functionality with emotion.

We want to listen to your dreams, understand your values, and translate them into a home that speaks to your soul. With us, you're not just getting organized or interior design; you're getting a home where every corner resonates with gratitude and the essence of you.

Gratitude has the power to transform our lives. When practiced daily, it can bring about a profound change in our mindset, relationships, and overall well-being. As we express gratitude for our homes, we also learn to value the moments and memories they house.
